OSAT Speech Drama Debate Exam


This OSAT test is focused on three themes: Speech, drama, and debate, all taught in public schools in Oklahoma. Drama classes in schools encourage students to think creatively. Through these courses, students are taught to take responsible roles and make choices – to participate and guide their own learning.

Activities of these classes involve preparing speeches with the goal of informing. They might also include panel discussions and oral interpretation. This might take place inside the class, school, or even on the district level. A teacher of these classes should educate in the theme of students’ public speaking and debate skills, helps them with preparing the speeches, contradiction, and cross-examinations, conducts practices and drills, does logistics and instructions.

A test that is conducted in the state of Oklahoma, called the OSAT Speech/Drama/Debate exam is suitable for teachers wanting to educate in public schools on these themes. After taking this test, a teacher can start teaching in public schools.

Eligibility for OSAT Speech Drama Debate Exam

To become a public school teacher for the themes of drama, speech, or debate one must have a degree in drama or theatre studies plus and a diploma in Education. Except for this guideline, all educators that have a background in these studies can apply. It doesn’t matter if they are finishing their education or entry-level teachers. All you need to have is a BA degree in a topic related to this course.

The OSAT Speech/Drama/Debate or OSAT code 116 is divided into three sectors and these are:

  1. Public Speaking and Debate
  2. Drama
  3. Pedagogical Content Knowledge

These themes should make sure the future teachers hold certain competencies before setting out into the classroom. These competencies should include: Applying knowledge of the functions, characteristics, and components of the communication process, public speeches, speech presentation, argumentation, and debate, analyzing dramatic literature, performance, and production from various cultures and periods, and many others.

Format of OSAT Speech Drama Debate Exam

This is a timed test with a duration of up to four hours and fifteen minutes. It is taken on the computer and not available in the paper-and-pen form. The OSAT Speech/Drama/Debate test is constructed so that it has eighty multiple-choice questions and one longer assignment or essay-type at the end of the exam. This exam can be taken throughout the year in different testing facilities, after choosing a time and date.

How to Apply for OSAT Speech Drama Debate Exam

The first thing a new teacher needs to do is finish an introductory test or OGET on the official testing site. After acquiring an online profile and teaching identification number for the state of Oklahoma, all potential applicants need to pay a small fee for taking the test. After this, they are eligible to take the OSAT 116 test in the next year. The testing fee consists of:

  • $80 for taking the test
  • $25 as a CBT fee
  • $30 registration processing fee

Scores for OSAT Speech Drama Debate Exam

Official testing results are available online, and even the dates on which they are published are visible. Mostly, the publication dates are around one month after finishing the exam. For this test, the passing score should be at least 240 points. Certain types of questions in the test acquire different percentages of the score, and this means:

  • 85% of the score is taken from the 80 selected-response questions
  • 15% of the score is taken from the 1 constructed-response question
