FTCE Computer Science K-12 Exam


FTCE computer science examinations are designed for the candidates who wish to teach Computer Science for the grades kindergarten through twelve in the state of Florida. Computer science is an important subject that is solely responsible for shaping up the present and future. Educators who wish to teach the subject in Florida are required to take up the exam as a professional teacher.

The exam is conducted by the Florida Department of Education (FLDOE) to grant the certifications to the educators who qualify. These certifications provide a unique platform for educators to teach. It offers two kinds of certifications- professional and temporary.

  • Professional certifications are long-term based and are valid for 5 academic years. These can be renewed.
  • Temporary certifications, last for 3 academic years and are non-renewable. With this type of certification, candidates are required to apply for professional certification to continue teaching.

Eligibility for FTCE Computer Science K-12 Examination

For the candidates to be eligible to take the FTCE Computer Science Exam, they are required to meet certain eligibility requirements as specified by the board.

  • For Professional certification, the candidates must have a bachelor's degree and specialization in the field of Computer Science.
  • For temporary certifications, candidates must have a GPA of 2.5 and a bachelor's degree in Computer Science.
  • Both the certifications require fingerprint reports to secure any past criminal history, then only the candidates are provided with the certifications.

Syllabus for FTCE Computer Science K-12 Exam

The computer science test evaluates the knowledge of the applicant on the concepts of computer science. The examination involves the following core areas-

  • Computational thinking and problem-solving techniques- 15%
  • Data types and structures- 15%
  • Programming logic- 20%
  • Programming languages- 20%
  • Computer hardware, software, and networking- 10%
  • Aspects and issues related to Computer technologies- 10%
  • Computer Science Pedagogy- 10%

The major aspect of the exam focuses on programming languages and logic which covers 40% of the syllabus. Candidates are also required to test the knowledge of logical aspects.

Format for FTCE Computer Science K-12 Exam

  • FTCE Computer science exam involves 120 multiple-choice questions.
  • The allotted time to complete the exam is 2 hours and 30 minutes.

The questions are based on different formats like

  • Sentence completion
  • Scenario
  • Command
  • Direct question

To qualify for the exam, candidates are required to score 200 and above.

Candidates can apply for the exam round the year. It is available through appointment and candidates can schedule the test during the registration based on the available dates. The test sites are located through Florida and nationwide in the US. The fee for the FTCE Computer Science Exam is USD 200.
