American College testing program emerged somewhere around 1950s and the organization was found in 1950

Primarily designed for

Helping students to make better decision about colleges to attend and which programs to study
Providing information helpful to colleges both in process of admitting students and in ensuring their success after enrolment.

Format of ACT Exams


English

The first section is the 45-minute English test. Covers usage/mechanics and rhetorical skills.

75-question test consists of

Five passages with various sections underlined on one side of the page and options to correct the underlined portions on the other side of the page.

Maths Exam

The second section is the 60-minute Maths exam.

60-question maths test with

14 covering pre-algebra
10 elementary algebra
9 intermediate algebra
14 plane geometry
9 coordinate geometry
4 elementary trigonometry

ACT exams permit the use of calculators with paper tapes. This section has five choices instead of normal four choices.

Reading

This section is for 35-minute.

40-question reading section measures reading comprehension in four passages (taken and edited from books and magazines)

Prose fiction (short stories and novels)
Social science (history, economics, psychology, political science, and anthropology)
Humanities (art, music, architecture, dance)
Natural science (biology, chemistry, physics, and the physical sciences)

Science reasoning

The science reasoning test is a 35-minute

40-question test with seven passages each followed by five to seven questions.

Three Data Representation passages with 5 questions following each passage
3 Research Summary passage with six questions each
1 Conflicting Viewpoints passage with 7 questions

Writing

This is an optional writing section and always administered at the end of the test

Duration of this exam is 30 minutes.

All essays must be in response to a given prompt.

The prompts are all about social issues applicable to high school student. Test may have no affect on your overall score. Instead, a separate English/writing score is created.

Although the writing section is optional, several schools do require an essay score and will factor it in the admissions decision.
