MTEL Dance Exam


MTEL- Massachusetts Tests for Educator Licensure program. This exam was initiated by the Massachusetts Department of elementary and secondary education in the year 1998. This test was initiated as part of statewide education program reform for educators seeking licenses to teach. The program covers topics related to Dance Movements, Expressions, Social impacts as well as tests related to subject matter knowledge.

MTEL Dance Exams are designed to ensure that the educators can demonstrate good knowledge of dance movements and various dance styles. This ensures if the candidates are reliable and knowledgeable enough in the subject matter of the license. It was expanded in the year 2004 to further include the tests for candidates who need vocational, technical, and basic education licenses.

Eligibility for MTEL Dance Exam

Massachusetts offers teaching as a requirement for the candidates who wish to teach or instruct students of all ages and are passionate about dance. Any candidate who is looking forward to pursuing a career in teaching dance must have a bachelor's degree in the field of dance education.

Candidates who are just completing or have completed their undergraduate are able to work when they take the test.

Syllabus for MTEL Dance Exam

The syllabus for the MTEL Dance Exam requires candidates to be proficient in the following core areas-

  • Dance movement- Weightage 27%
  • Understanding of the movement skills, elements, and concepts.
  • Dance as expression- Weightage 27%
  • It involves understanding of the principles and application of the choreography.
  • Dance and Society- Weightage 26%
  • It is based on the concept of analysis of the relationship between dance and society.

    The open response-based question covers- Integration of knowledge and understanding which has an overall weightage of 20%. Candidates who are keen on getting their initial license in the field of dancing must qualify for the exam in these core areas.

    Format for MTEL Dance Exam

    It is a computer-based and an online proctored test. It has been designed in the following format-

    • The test involves 100 multiple choice questions and 2 open-response assignments.
    • The allotted time to complete the exam is 4 hours and 15 minutes. 15 minutes are provided to the candidates as part of the CBT tutorial and NDA Agreement and 4 hours is the testing time. The 4 hours includes- 2 hours for MCQ and 2 hours for open-response-based assignments. Candidates can take restroom breaks during the testing period.
    • There is an optional 15-minute break between MCQ and the open-response section.
    • Candidates are required to score 240 to qualify for the exam.

      How to apply for the MTEL Dance Exam

      Candidates can apply for the exam during the testing windows. These can be viewed on the official MTEL website. These can be scheduled on specific dates during the testing date ranges.

      Test centers are located in Massachusetts and nationwide in the US. Candidates can find the nearest center which best suits them. Candidates may even take the test remotely including from their home depending upon the test environment requirements.

      The fee for the exam is USD 139.

      Important information for MTEL Dance Exam

      • Registration for the test remains valid for one year from the date of issue. If the candidates don't schedule test appointments and don't take the test within the year then the registration will get expired.
      • Candidates can request alternative testing arrangements if they are facing disability issues or are nursing mothers.
